A major advantage of walnut wood is that it does not shrink or grow under certain weather conditions. Furthermore, the wood is relatively easy to work with and to finish beautifully.
The brown to dark brown, sometimes brownish-reddish heartwood with fine lighter streaks stands out clearly against the narrow grey-white to yellowish sapwood. The colour becomes somewhat lighter as it dries and is exposed to light and air. The beautifully marked, often slightly streaked wood has a moderate to clear sheen.
The heartwood is brick-red to yellow-brown, slightly darkening. The sapwood is reddish-brown, sometimes with yellow spots and clearly distinguishable from the heartwood. An unpleasant symptom of copy is that the damp trunk has a strong smell. This odor diminishes after drying. It is easy to saw and an ideal species for construction, water and horticulture.
The heartwood is freshly sawn yellow, darkening from orange-brown to dark brown or brown with a yellow-green tinge. The 20-80 mm thick sapwood is distinctly different in colour and whitish, grayish or brownish yellow. Due to the ample parenchyma around the vessels, Faveira Amargosa has fine but conspicuous light streaks. The smell is not noticeable.
